So who are The Guild of Taxidermists?

They are an organisation formed in 1976 by top exponents of the art to:-

Improve the standard of work that was on the market at the time and Project the legal trade and liaise with relevant authorities.

It is the only organisation in the U.K. to write a recognised qualification in the subject and holds Seminars in the UK every year along with an AGM and 3 day Conference. Over the years with their members now producing top quality work, more and more time is spent on the liaison role. The Guild represents the trade at the highest level, consulting both with the Government (DEFRA) and Enforcement Authorities. Many of the regulations and policies now in force have been amended or formed due to the Guild's input. As stated the Guild co-operates closely with the enforcement authorities such as the Police and UK Border Force. It also has a close relationship with organisations such as the RSPB, RSPCA, SSPCA, TRAFFIC (the WWF investigation arm) and many others, assisting them in cases where a minority brings the trade into disrepute. It will continue to strive to protect the legal operator and gain a respectability that when done correctly the art deserves. The Guild is open to all who are interested in the art, be they collectors, traders, novices or experts. All its members operate within a code of conduct and are subject to its constitution. Members receive a quarterly newsletter keeping them informed of legal and other matters along with an annual publication (The Journal). Two Seminars are held annually, one usually in the South and the other in the North along with a Spring AGM/Conference. The three day AGM/Conference is the main event with taxidermists from as far afield as Europe and the United States lecturing on various techniques. Various competitions can be entered and the Award Ceremony is the finale of the event. Both Seminars and Conference are open to all members and are especially useful for those learning the art.

Interested to learn how it's done ?

Taxidermy is currently going through a revival and is once again becoming popular in both modern and traditional homes.

This is great news, however this has caused an increase in individuals with limited ability offering instructional courses. While these may appear cheap and at times fun, anyone seriously wanting to learn the correct methods should seek instruction from a tutor who is an "Accredited" or "Specialist" member of The Guild of Taxidermists where they will be taught how to attain high quality results that will last for many years to come. The following members who offer courses are recognised by the Guild of Taxidermists.

Guild of Taxidermists Approved Taxidermy Inspectors.

This is a scheme originally set up by DEFRA & The Guild of Taxidermists to assist where possible, collectors of taxidermy whom for one reason or another have little or no provenance for a specimen they wish to sell.

It would be more commonly used on species where the individual Article 10 or Schedule 5 licenses are required.

These Inspectors are geographically placed around the U.K. but are totally independent of DEFRA. In no way will the inspectors' conclusions guarantee a licence being issued, however it will assist the issuing authority when making the decision. Each inspector will, by virtue of the fact that they are an independent service, make a charge for the research or expert opinion.

The system has certainly proved it's worth, assisting not only private sellers but Auction Houses across the country.
